Jill Scott on Why She Only Dates for Six Months
"IF YOU MAKE IT OVER THE SIX MONTH HUMP, YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING. I MUST REALLY LIKE YOU," SAYS THE "WITH THE RING" STAR, according to her interview with Essence magazine back in 2020.
It was interesting to hear her take on being more aware of things concerning relationships and not wanting to waste her time.
Her sentiments brought me back to something I've been saying for the past year about dating: #MeetMeAtTheMonkeyBars.
It's a term I came up with to sum up what dating should entail at the beginning. No long drawn out, expensive, pretentious dates where you've got to buy a new dress and pay overnight baby-sitting fees to your niece for watching your kid.
You meet him at a public park during daylight hours, and feed pigeons or ducks some stale bread ends while you just talk to him for 30-40 mins, then go home!
You get to see if he's interested or interesting while you and he are sober! How revolutionary is that???
Jill is on to something here.
How much time do you think you really need to get to know enough about a man to make a conscientious decision to marry him?
Psychologists say that the longer the dating process is, or, God forbid, the live-in boyfriend situation is, the likelihood of it leading to marriage actually reduces.
In other words, the more you know, the less you want!
Jill has 2 failed marriages under her belt and a couple of fail relationships to boot, so I think she knows what a dub looks like from a mile away at this point!
Even if you are unclear about what an ideal relationship looks like to you, you can still benefit from taking your time and avoiding high pressure situations and high-pressure sale tactics from men looking for a piece flesh to go pound town on!
Stay away from environments with men where you feel pressured into performing for his attention. That would be my biggest piece of advice to any woman who is on the dating scene for the purpose of marriage.

Oh!
By the way, for those of you who haven't signed up for Patreon yet, you are really missing out on the full experience of the Ugly Girls Philosophy. This Saturday, I will be interviewing a self-proclaimed witch about living intentionally and unapologetically as a woman who's classified an unattractive.
The information that will be shared can help you show up and advocate for your well-being and happiness without hesitation or fear of judgement. Hope to see you there!
